vows
Traditional Vows
I, (Name),
Take you, (Name),
To be my (wife / husband);
To have and to hold,
From this day forward,
For better, for worse,
For richer, for poorer,
In sickness and in health,
To love and to cherish,
As long as we both shall live.
Contemporary Vows
I come here today, (name),
to join my life to yours
before this company.
In their presence
I pledge to be true to you,
to respect you,
and to grow with you through the years.
No matter what we may encounter together,
I vow here that this love
will be my only love.
I will make my home in your heart
from this day forward.
Love Vows
My promise to you is simple,
I'll endure until the end.
I'll be your one and only,
Your lover and your friend,
I'll listen and I'll nurture,
I'll fight and I'll be true.
I'll do my equal share,
and I will never give up on you.
I'll try to do my very best,
to fulfill your every need.
I'll walk beside you hand in hand,
I'll help you to succeed.
I'll be your constant equal,
I'll give you room to grow,
I'll tend to you when you are sick,
build you up when you are low.
I stand before these witnesses,
And I say unto you,
No matter what hard times we face,
our love will make it through.
Traditional Religious Vows
I, (name),
Take you, (name),
To be my (husband / wife),
And these things I promise you:
I will be faithful to you
and honest with you;
I will respect, trust,
help and care for you;
I will share my life with you;
I will forgive you
as we have been forgiven;
and I will try with you
to better understand
ourselves, the world, and God;
through the best and the worst
of what is to come
as long as we both shall live.
Religious Vows
As freely, (name),
as God has given me life,
I join my life with yours.
Wherever you go, I will go;
whatever you face, I will face.
For good or ill,
in happiness or sadness,
come riches or poverty,
I take you as my (husband / wife),
and will give myself to no other.
"I Do" Vows
Groom, will you have Bride to be your wife? Will you love her, comfort her, keep her in sickness and in health and forsaking all others, be faithful to her so long as you both shall live?
I do.
Bride, will you have Groom to be your husband? Will you love him, comfort him, keep him in sickness and in health and forsaking all others, be faithful to him so long as you both shall live?
I do.
Write Your Own Vows
If you have time, you can write your own vows. I will be happy to help you and give you some suggestions. An easy method is to take one of these above vows as a template and put them into your own words. That way, it’s still personalized but not as hard as starting from scratch.
I often have to remind couples that these are you vows (promises and commitments to one another), not what you love about each other. So you need to make sure you are promising and committing to each other in your vows.
